Learning Objectives
- Identify best practices for online reading.
Best Practices for Digital Reading
In October 2017, INFOhio released the Best Practices for Digital Reading. The document includes the best practices when using digital text in the classroom with students who are learning to read and reading to learn with digital text. In addition, the document includes the best practices for choosing digital text to use in the classroom or learning environment.
These research-based best practices were developed by a team of curriculum experts, librarians, technology support staff, and educators from the INFOhio Early Literacy Task Force. While the best practices were developed with early readers in mind, the strategies and approaches can be used with learners of any age.
Use the document, Best Practices for Digital Reading Guided Notes, at the bottom of this lesson to help with your learning. Challenge yourself as a reader and don't print the document!
Reflecting on Your Learning
- Which of the best practices do you already do during instruction? Which might be most difficult?
- Think of a lesson you currently use to teach reading or content. What are three of the best practices you can implement and how will you use them in the lesson? Answer this question in the Reading on the Screen Open Space group Discussions. Find the Best Practices for Digital Reading reflection question in the Discussions tab. Review the thread and reply to other participants' responses.
- Find someone else who would like to know more about the best practices. What is an elevator speech you could give that will let this person know why these are important?
