Learning in Action

Now that you have learned how to search for items using Fetch, practice using your skills by completing one of the following exercises:

View summaries of items in your library:

  1. From the Find Your Library page on the INFOhio website, locate your district and school and click the Fetch paw to access Fetch.
  2. Try a very simple search, i.e, dog.
  3. Click a book cover. This will open the detail view of that item.
  4. Look for a description of the book beneath the availability information.
  5. View the summary information.
  6. Note the "More Info" button which will provide further details about the title by opening a new window.
  7. Note the subject headings and click one to initiate a new search for that subject.

Consider the following questions:

  • Which of your users will be most interested in seeing summary information? Subject headings?
  • At what point will your users want to see summary information? Subject headings?
  • What method will you use to point your users to summary information? Subject headings?

Find items in your library at specific reading levels:

  1. From the Find Your Library page on the INFOhio website, locate your district and school and click the Fetch paw to access Fetch.
  2. From the top menu on the Fetch homepage, click Reading Level and try a search for one of the following based on how you have cataloged books in your library:
    • Accelerated Reader
    • Lexile
    • Reading Counts
    • If you aren't sure whether you have cataloged items with any reading level or reading program information, choose one of the options from the drop-down to try searching for that Reading Level program.
  3. Enter any search terms and the appropriate points or levels.
  4. In your search results, note the reading level information available.
  5. Click on a title to open the detailed view.
  6. Note the reading program information listed here.
  7. Close the detailed view by clicking the x at the top of the pop-up window.

Consider the following questions:

  • Which of your users are interested in reading programs or reading levels? Which reading program or programs?
  • Do you already organize your physical library space in a way that makes it easy for students to find items that are right for their reading and interest levels?

Find items in your library using Visual Search:

  1. From the Find Your Library page on the INFOhio website, locate your district and school and click the Fetch paw to access Fetch.
  2. From the top menu on the Fetch homepage, click Visual Search and click a search term.
  3. Depending on the chosen term, you may need to continue limiting your search by clicking another icon.
  4. Once you have reached a list of titles, note how many items matched that search.
  5. Note the search box and the search terms listed.

Consider the following questions:

  • Which of your users would benefit from using visual search?
  • How could you use the search terms noted in Step 5 above to teach your students better searching skills in a basic search?
